What exactly are drivers? The term is used all the time when computer hardware fails to function correctly or doesn't function at all and typically refers to a piece of software allowing the computer itself to interact with a hardware device. So if your printer isn't working there's a pretty good chance either the drivers aren't up to date, are missing completely or the printer hardware itself is malfunctioning.

Drivers are necessary on a software level so that application programmers can easily access the functions of a particular piece of hardware without having to write low level code to directly instruct the hardware device. In order to write a device driver an in depth knowledge of the hardware itself is necessary. Drivers have high system privileges and must be written carefully as unstable driver software can cause system crashes and damage to the hardware.
